A Philippine passport is a document issued by the Philippine government to its citizens requesting other governments to allow Filipinos to pass freely, and in case of need, to give them lawful aid and protection. It remains at all times the property of the Philippine government, as the holder is only its possessor. As long as the passport is valid, it may not be surrendered to any person or entity other than the Philippine government or its representative.

The new e-Passport makes the Philippine passport highly secure with its introduction of microchip technology.

All passport applications, including those filed in Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) are processed in Manila.  FSPs have no control over the processing time. It merely receives passport applications, captures the applicant’s biometrics, and electronically transmits the applications to Manila for processing.

To avoid any inconvenience, applicants are advised to submit their passport applications at least three (3) months before their scheduled travel, before the expiration of their visas, or before the expiration of their regular green or maroon passports. Applicants are also reminded that Philippine passports may be renewed six (6) months before the expiry date.

Applying for the new electronic passport requires personal appearance at the Embassy. The biometric information of the applicant (i.e. photo, signature, and fingerprints) will be captured electronically. The process of capturing biometric information takes thirty (30) to sixty (60) minutes.

Due to the large volume of passport applications, the average waiting time between the date of application and the date of arrival of the new passport in Yangon can take four (4) to six (6) weeks.

The Philippine passport is valid for ten (10) years for adult (18yrs old above), and five (5) years for minors (17yrs old below) from the date of issuance.

A holder of a Philippine passport is encouraged to apply for renewal of the passport at least one (1) year before the expiration of its validity period or when its visa pages are about to run out.
